Melville Knights of Columbus
Melville
(306) 728-5220

In 1962 it was decided to name the council after Rev. Father Pander who had been St. Henry’s Roman Catholic Parish Priest from 1915 to 1928 and who had done numerous great things for the church and the Separate School System and for the Town of Melville as well. At first the Knights didn’t have a place to meet so they met in homes of Knights. Later, they met every morning at St. Henry’s Cottage School. In 1966, they decided to build a Knights of Columbus Club House and it was built on the corner of Queen Street and 11th Avenue and called the Columbian Centre.

Soon, the Columbus hall was used for weddings, meetings, dances, and other various socials. In 1978, the Columbian Centre was expanded to the west with a full basement and an entrance from 11th Avenue. Most of the labour of building the extension was through volunteers. The Knights of Columbus as an association of Catholic men, faithful to the Church and dedicated to four cardinal principles – charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism. During these years, the Council has contributed extensively to charity. For example, they have been making annual financial contributions to the Mother Theresa Housing Project in India, to the State Charity Fund, at least $1.00 per member to the Knights of Columbus Mission Fund. They helped provide lights for the Father Thomas Novak diamond at the Melville Regional Park and they have been assisting in the operation of Camp O’Neil for a number of years.
