History

Duff was named for a mountain 7,170 feet high on the international boundary between British Columbia and Alaska. The mountain had been named for the Right Honourable Mr. Justice Duff, who had been a member of the Supreme Court of Canada, junior counsel before the Alaska Boundary Tribunal, 1903.

This small village of 30 residents lies on Highway 10, just 23km west of Melville.

Tourist Attractions

The main attraction to the town is the Duff Community Heritage Museum, built out of an old town church. The Museum features a recreational pioneer-era kitchen and old rural schoolhouse, along with many other historical items and photos from the village’s history.

The museum is open by appointment and volunteers hope to hold its annual open house and tea in August. Another highlight of the museum celebration will be a barbecue supper at the sport’s ground hosted by the Duff Community Association. Call 728-3275 or 728-3350 for a tour of the site.

The association also plans to host a supper and auction sometime late in the summer or early fall to raise money for the community.

Also, within the small village lies a commemorative cairn that was opened during the 2005 Saskatchewan Centennial Celebrations.

The Cairn reads as follows:

Commemorating the Duff District jubilee on July 5-6, 1980 and Saskatchewan’s 75th anniversary. In remembrance of residents of the school districts Colmer, Duff, Finnie, Garden, Lake Mona, Pheasant Forks, Pheasant Hills, Southview, and Yola.
