History

Fenwood is the second stop northwest on the Canadian National Railway line out of Melville on its way to Saskatoon.

The exact history is unknown as any facts before 1920 were destroyed in a council chamber fire. However, there are three theories regarding the origin of the name Fenwood.

The first is that the Grand Truck Railway officials gave the town its name and there was no significance to it, other than that it fitted into alphabetical pattern according to its place alongside Highway 15: Fenwood, Goodeve, Hubbard, Ituna, Jasmin, Keliher, and Leross.

The second theory is that the name was based on the many fan-shaped trees that were growing in the area at the time.

The third theory is based on the first inhabitants who were Scottish, Irish and British and found the area fen (marshes, swamps, bogs), large bodies of water and brushland, so they named it Fenwood.

Some of Fenwood’s firsts are as follows: settler – Houser; lumberyard – Pete Sandbeck; store – Outamby and Sandbeck; postmaster – S. Good; church – Lurtheran; hotel – John Boyle; bank – Bank of Montreal; station agent – Oscar Deshay.
