History

Northwest of Melville, Fenwood starts another of the alphabetical series so favoured by the Grand Truck Railway. In order come Goodeve, Hubbard, Ituna, and so on.

Research in Saskatchewan Archives indicates that the Grand Truck Railway named the town for Arthur Samuel Goodeve, Member of Parliament, and a member of the Dominion Railway Commission at the time the line was built.

Recreation

Goodeve’s minor-ball program has slowed over the past few years, but many recreational games are still played here over the summer months.

In addition, the Goodeve Giants of the Tri-Highway Fastball League host their games in Goodeve.

Goodeve has a couple of community centres within the village and these centres usually have an activity or gathering going on over the course of the year.

Also, a fabulously constructed playground is located near the old school.

Clubs/Organizations

Goodeve is a very proud 4-H community. The members are busy learning valuable life skills and performing important tasks around the community such as: picking garbage and maintaining a positive role model image.

Due to dropping attendance rates, the local school was forced to close and all students are bussed to Melville for schooling.

Tourism

Battersly Wildlife Protection

In 1974, Thomas Battersly, the last surviving son of a family that came from Great Britain and settled in the Goodeve district in 1892, donated 320 acres of beautiful countryside land to the provincial government to ensure its protection as a wildlife and historic area.

The government purchased another section and added it to the Battersly property, and made it a haven for wildlife.

Another tourist attraction of the area is the historic school that was one of the first of its kind in the area once the settlers arrived.

A couple of Cairns are also located within the village as they commemorate the lives of soldiers’ lost during the war.
