History

Killaly is a village of 95 residents located at the junction of Highways 22 and 47, 22 km south of Melville and only 10km north of the Qu’Appelle Valley.

By 1897, Killaly was known as a settlement within the Mariahilf district. This settlement consisted of some 25 families and 3 bachelors who all immigrated to Canada on the same ship and decided to make the region their home. Telephone service was established in 1919 once it was connected with Central at Grayson. Furthermore, service could be used only from the morning till approximately 8 p.m.

From the tiny settlement of Mariahilf, the community grew and expanded northward and finally led to the formation of the village of Killaly.

During 1904, the Canadian Pacific Railway constructed a line connecting McAuley to Neudorf. It was while this portion of railway was being constructed that Killaly received its name from an engineer by the name of “Killaley”. In 1909, Killaly was incorporated as a village.

In the 1970’s, the Canadian Pacific Railway no longer provided passenger service in Killaly and the freight trains operated only once a day. The Sask. Wheat Pool elevator was the last of three elevators and it was demolished in August 1998 and shortly thereafter, the railway tracks were removed.

In 1976, a grand opening for the Senior Citizens Drop in Centre took place. To this day it is still currently a great place for the seniors to get together to socialize and play cards. Also in 1981, the Killaly Parish Centre was built beside the church. The Sunset Lodge, a housing complex for citizens was built behind the rectory in 1988-89.
