History

The rail yard, belonging to the Canadian National Railway, is the reason Melville is a city of nearly 5,000 people today. The Grand Trunk Railway came through the city in the early 1900s with the first parcel of land sold to a Mr. Pope in 1906, representing the Grand Truck Pacific Town site and Development Company. At this time, Pope told people the land he bought would be a city some day.
Two years later, in 1908, the last spike of the railway was driven and Melville celebrated its birth. The community was thus named after the president of the railway -- Charles Melville Hays. It was second divisional point on the railway west of Winnipeg.

The years between 1910 and 1914 were important to the community with the construction of the community's first power plant, hospital, the Melville Milling Company, Coal Docks and Luther College.

In 1939, Melville’s name became very important throughout Canada because of the great welcome given by the people to King George and Queen Elizabeth when they made a scheduled ten-minute stop on June 3rd, 1939. Their Majesties lengthened their stay into almost an hour when they were greeted in Melville by 60,000 people and 10,000 of those cheering school children waving flags.
Their Majesties were welcomed with a brilliant display. There was an elaborate amount of lighting that made the scene almost as light as day. The Pool elevator had a huge floodlight welcoming sign and decoration. The cameramen that were traveling with Their Majesties claimed that Melville was the best of the whole Canadian tour. Today, at The Museum of Natural History in Hull, Quebec, a display representing Melville and Their Majesties stop through the town is available to view. This display is a wonderful representation of Melville during 1939.

Melville officially became a city on August 1, 1960 and the community now has many organizations, service clubs and sport, culture and recreation activities.

However, the town's history extends one year earlier to 1907 when J.W. Redgwick brought a load of lumber from Killaly and built The Pioneer Store. Thirty blocks were surveyed and staked out with a lumberyard and hardware store quick to follow. Lots were selling from $60.00 to $400.00.

The town grew rapidly in the early years, jumping from 66 people, to 625 and then over 1,000 people in 1909 with town status. The first council meeting was held January 4, 1909 at the town's newspaper office.

There are also more than 100 black and white original photographs as well as a vintage 1910 portrait camera. The oldest item in the museum is a volume of German-language sermons, printed in Leipzig in 1721. The museum's newest exhibit contains a history of sports, portraying some of the internationally known athletes who have represented Melville.
