Special Needs Facility
306-728-4181
Melville Comprehensive School (MCS) has one of the finest special needs facilities in the province. The school boasts three separate settings within the school to meet the diverse needs of all of the students who attend MCS.
The classroom setting provides a variety of equipment, which is used to enhance student learning and living opportunities. A large personal care area, with a walk in shower, allows privacy for students who require personal assistance. The area also includes a fully equipped kitchen, including a washer and dryer to teach functional life skills to the students. An academic area, including networked and individualized computers, and a social area round out the learning experience for the students. Another highlight of this area is a large self-contained hydrotherapy unit, which enables staff to carry out water therapy programs designed for individual students by Wascana Rehabilitation Center in Regina.
Therapy is very important, especially for students with limited mobility, so MCS has committed space for a large therapy area. This area includes a therapy bed, mirrors, athletic equipment and a variety of small therapeutic equipment. Staff members are trained to carry out programs which have been designed by the physical and occupational therapists that serve our school.
MCS also has a state-of-the-art Snoezlen room for the students to utilize. This sensory room contains interactive displays to engage all five senses: including fiber optic lighting, bubble machines, vibrating mats, soothing music, and aromatherapy. Sensory stimulation therapy has a claming effect for students whose environment may be under-stimulated due to physical and cognitive challenges.
These outstanding facilities, combined with integration of special needs students into community and leisure activities, provides the best possible educational opportunities for the special needs population at Melville Comprehensive School.
